GTA 6 release date (and how we got here)
Grand Theft Auto VI is due Thursday, November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s official GTA VI site still says “Coming November 19, 2026.” Take-Two’s fiscal Q1 2027 earnings release in August 2026 listed the same date, and CEO Strauss Zelnick pointed to “the November 19th launch of Grand Theft Auto VI” when he reiterated the company’s full-year outlook.
The game has slipped twice:
- December 2023: Trailer 1 announced the game for 2025.
- May 2025: Rockstar delayed it to May 26, 2026.
- November 6, 2025: Rockstar delayed it again to November 19, 2026. The studio said the extra months would let it “finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.”
The date has held since then. Pre-orders opened in June, and both Rockstar’s site and Take-Two still list November 19. Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has announced a launch time.
Platforms: PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, and PC
- PS5 and PS5 Pro: Sony and Rockstar have a marketing deal, and the official site says GTA VI “plays best on PS5.” A PlayStation Blog post lists DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, the controller speaker, Tempest 3D Audio, and “near-instant” loading from the SSD. The PlayStation Store lists the game as PS5 Pro Enhanced. As of early October, though, neither company had said what the Pro gets you (resolution, frame rate, or both).
- Xbox Series X|S: Both consoles are supported. The Series S is the budget option, and we’d expect it to run at lower settings than Series X. Rockstar hasn’t published per-console performance targets yet.
- PC: Not announced. Rockstar has historically released PC versions after the console launch (GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 both did), but there’s no official PC date or confirmation for GTA VI.
- PS4 / Xbox One: Not supported. Take-Two lists only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Price, editions, and pre-orders
Pre-orders opened at midnight local time on June 25, 2026. Rockstar confirmed the US prices in its pre-order announcement:
| Edition | Price (US) | Formats | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | $79.99 | Digital, or physical code in box | The full single-player game |
| Ultimate Edition | $99.99 | Digital only | Game plus “an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story” |
| The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection | $399.99 | Rockstar Store only | 11 physical collectibles themed around Macca the Gator. The game isn’t included. Ships November 19 while supplies last. |
Before you pre-order, keep in mind:
- Pre-order bonus: All pre-orders and purchases made before November 20, 2026 include the Vintage Vice City Pack. Rockstar also gives digital pre-orders a free month of GTA+.
- There’s no disc in the box. The physical version contains a download code, and retailers start delivering it on November 12 so you can pre-load. A boxed Ultimate Edition doesn’t exist. If you buy a physical copy, you can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade from the PlayStation or Xbox store after you redeem the code.
- On Amazon (checked October 6): the PS5 (B0H6K928WL) and Xbox Series X|S (B0H6K49W6Y) Standard Edition code-in-box listings are up for pre-order at $79.99. Amazon US doesn’t list the Ultimate Edition or the Vice City Collection. Buy those from the PlayStation Store, the Xbox Store, or the Rockstar Store.
- Is GTA Online included? Rockstar describes GTA VI as a single-player experience. It hasn’t said when a new online mode will arrive.
Trailers
Rockstar has released three main videos on its official YouTube channel.
Trailer 1 (December 2023)
Trailer 2 (May 2025)
An Extended Look (August 27, 2026)
This preview runs nearly 27 minutes. It premiered on Netflix before Rockstar posted it to YouTube, and The Verge reports that it was captured entirely on the PS5 version.
YouTube age-restricts this video, so it can’t be embedded here. Watch Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on YouTube (you’ll need to be signed in).
Setting: Leonida and Vice City
GTA VI takes place in Leonida, Rockstar’s take on Florida, and brings the series back to a modern-day Vice City. Here’s Rockstar’s official premise:
Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida.
Game Informer’s October 2026 cover story (summarized by GameSpot) reports that Leonida is about twice the size of GTA V’s map. It covers six regions: Vice City (Miami), Leonida Keys, Grassrivers (the Everglades), Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park.
Protagonists: Lucia and Jason
GTA VI has two leads, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, a criminal couple who rely on each other to get out of the conspiracy. Rockstar’s interviews in LOVE magazine and Game Informer this month added a few details. Lucia’s hometown is Liberty City, and Jason’s story begins in the Leonida Keys, where he’s working smaller jobs.
Confirmed gameplay details
Here’s what Rockstar has shown in trailers, the Extended Look, and authorized previews:
- Weather is dynamic and localized. You can see a distant storm from a plane, and puddles stay wet after it rains. Hurricanes are in the game too.
- Wildlife: Leonida has well over a hundred animal species, including alligators, manatees, flamingos, and sharks.
- Activities include base jumping, billiards, the gym, kayaking, racing, airboats, jet skis, mini-golf, and scuba diving.
- RydeMe is an in-game rideshare app you can use to get around.
- Combat and chases: the Extended Look shows playable shootouts and police car chases.
Not confirmed yet: file size, performance modes and frame rates (including what the PS5 Pro adds), the exact launch time, a PC version, and when the next GTA Online arrives. Anything you see about those right now is rumor.
Best way to play GTA 6
Right now GTA VI is console-only, so your choice is between PlayStation and Xbox. Rockstar hasn’t published performance modes, so these picks are based on confirmed platform features and the hardware specs, not GTA VI benchmarks. Prices are moving during Amazon’s October sales, so check the live listing. Product cards for every pick are at the bottom of this page.
Best overall: PlayStation 5 Pro
Buy this if you want the version Sony and Rockstar are marketing as the best way to play, plus whatever the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” patch adds.
The PS5 Pro (B0DGY63Z2H) has a 2TB SSD built in, PSSR AI upscaling, and stronger ray tracing in enhanced games. It’s digital-only out of the box. That’s not a problem for GTA VI, since even the boxed copy is just a code. Amazon itself wasn’t selling it when we checked (only third-party sellers), so compare prices before you buy.
Best value PlayStation: PS5 Digital Edition (825GB)
Buy this if you want every PS5-exclusive GTA VI feature (DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers, Tempest 3D Audio) for less money.
The current PS5 Digital Edition (B0FRGMYJMG) is the entry-level PS5. The catch is the 825GB drive. Rockstar hasn’t announced GTA VI’s file size, so plan on adding an M.2 SSD (below) if you play other big games too.
Best Xbox: Xbox Series X
Buy this if you’re already invested in Xbox or Game Pass.
The Xbox Series X (B08H75RTZ8) is the full-power Xbox, with a 1TB SSD and a disc drive. You won’t need the drive for GTA VI because of the code-in-box release. You won’t get the PS5-specific DualSense features, but you will get the full game on day one. The cheaper Series S is supported too, but expect it to run at lower settings.
Accessories worth adding
- Storage: WD_BLACK SN850P 2TB for PS5 (B0C47ZX1WB). This officially licensed PCIe Gen4 M.2 SSD comes with a PS5-fit heatsink, and it’s the simplest storage upgrade for a base PS5. The PS5 Pro already has 2TB, so most Pro owners can skip it.
- Controller: DualSense Wireless Controller (B0FY6X2XXY). GTA VI uses the DualSense’s haptics, adaptive triggers, and speaker, so a spare is worth having for swapping while one charges.
- Headset: PlayStation PULSE Elite (B0G5SCBH91). It’s Sony’s PlayStation Link wireless headset, and it pairs well with GTA VI’s Tempest 3D Audio support. It also works with PS Portal and PC/Mac, and over Bluetooth with phones.
- TV: LG 55-inch C6 OLED (2026) (B0GRKGQ8HH). It’s a 4K OLED with VRR, up to a 165Hz refresh rate, and a 0.1ms response time, so it can show whatever 120Hz output the PS5 Pro and Series X deliver. Any 4K TV with HDMI 2.1 and 120Hz support will do.
Verdict
| If you… | Get |
|---|---|
| Want the best-looking console version | PS5 Pro + GTA VI |
| Want PS5 features for less | PS5 Digital Edition + a 2TB SN850P |
| Already play on Xbox | Xbox Series X + GTA VI (Xbox) |
| Only play on PC | Wait. No PC version has been announced. |
